Abstract

This article examines families counseling as an applied area of psychological counseling that aims to support families and improve interaction among their members. The article reviews the historical development of this field, indicating that it emerged within the systemic shift that took place in family therapy during the 1950s, when attention began to move from focusing solely on the individual toward viewing the family as a system of relationships and interactions. It also explains how these systemic concepts were later incorporated into counseling psychology during the 1960s and 1970s, with an increasing emphasis on growth, adjustment, and the improvement of family communication, until family counseling gradually developed into a professional specialization concerned with
strengthening family relationships and enhancing interaction skills within the family.
