Developing Early Literacy Skills Through Extracurricular Activities

This study examines “The Effect of Outdoor Pre-Literacy Program on Preschool Children’s Early Literacy Skills”. The study group consists of 40 children - 20 in the control group and 20 in the experiment group - with the age range of 60 and 66 months. The study results suggest there has been more increase in the scores of experiment group in Vocabulary and Listening Comprehension than the control group. While there was not a statistically significant difference between groups in Rhyme Awareness and Deletion of Initial Phoneme tests, the scores of experiment group increased much more in Matching Initial Sounds, Matching Ending Sounds, Segmenting the Sentence into Words, Segmenting the words into Syllables, Compound Syllables and Deletion of Last Phoneme tests. While there was a difference in favour of experiment group in Letter Knowledge in Recipient Language post-test, there was not a difference between groups in Letter Knowledge Expressive Language post-test.
